3D Laser Scanning – Plant Layout

Supporting a Plant Upgrade with 3D Laser Scanning and Mechanical Design

When upgrading existing manufacturing facilities, one of the biggest challenges isn’t designing new equipment. It is understanding the space and infrastructure that already exists.

NOVA Design recently supported a client during a plant upgrade project where increasing production capacity required the installation of an additional press facility and modifications to the existing chain conveyor system feeding the production line.

A common issue with older industrial facilities is that accurate engineering drawings are no longer available or have never been produced. Without reliable documentation, planning modifications can become significantly more complex, increasing the risk of clashes, installation delays and costly design revisions.

To overcome this challenge, NOVA Design carried out a comprehensive 3D laser scan of the existing installation, capturing an accurate digital representation of the production environment. This detailed survey provided the engineering team with the information needed to develop a precise 3D plant layout without relying on outdated or incomplete drawings.

Using this data, NOVA Design created an accurate digital model of the existing facility, allowing the proposed press installation and conveyor modifications to be planned within the available space before any physical changes were made on site.

Working from an accurate representation of the existing plant offered several advantages throughout the project, including:

  • Improved confidence in available installation space.
  • Reduced risk of clashes with existing equipment.
  • More informed planning of conveyor modifications.
  • Greater accuracy during the design phase.
  • Clear visualisation of the proposed layout before installation.

By developing the design around real-world site conditions, the client was able to assess the proposed changes with confidence and progress the project with a clearer understanding of how the new equipment would integrate with the existing production line.

Supporting Plant Modification Projects

Plant upgrades often involve working around existing machinery, structures and production constraints, making accurate information essential before detailed design work begins.

Whether supporting production line modifications, equipment relocations or complete facility upgrades, combining accurate site data with practical mechanical design helps reduce uncertainty and provides a stronger foundation for engineering decisions.

If you’re planning a plant upgrade or require support with mechanical design, 2D CAD services or BIM modelling services for an existing facility, contact NOVA Design to discuss your project with our experienced engineering team.
